15. PAST PERFECT (I had done)

Report this instance situation:

Sarah went to a party concluding week. Paul went to the party likewise, only they didn't see each other. Paul left t he party at 10.30 and Sarah arrived at 11 o'clock. So:

When Sarah arrived at the party, Paul wasn't there.

· He had gone habitation. Had gone is the by perfect (simple):

I/ we/ they/ y'all

had

(=I'd etc.)

gone

seen

finished

he/ she/ it

(=he'd etc)

The past perfect simple is had+ past participle (gone/ seen/ finished etc).

Sometimes we talk most something that happened in the by:

· Sarah arrived at the party.

This is the starting point of the story. Then, if we want to talk well-nigh things that happened earlier this time, we use the by perfect (had ... ):

· When Sarah arrived at the political party, Paul had already gone habitation.

Some more examples:

· When we got abode last night, nosotros found that somebody had cleaved into the flat.

· Karen didn't want to go to the movie theater with united states because she'd already seen the motion-picture show.

· At starting time I thought I'd washed the right matter, but I shortly realised that I'd made a large fault.

Compare the present perfect (have seen etc.) and the by perfect (had seen etc.):

· I wasn't sure who she was. I'd seen her earlier, just I couldn't call back where.

· The house was muddy. They hadn't cleaned it for weeks.

Compare the past simple (Left, was etc.) and the past perfect (had left, had been etc.):

· A: Was Tom there when y'all arrived?

B: Yes, but he left soon after.

· Kate wasn't at home when I phoned.

· She was at her female parent/s house.

· A: Was Tom at that place when y'all arrived?

B: No, he had already left.

· Kate had just got dwelling house when I phoned. She had been at her mother'due south house.
